How copper prices move

What’s moving this market

Structural fundamentals · Reviewed annually
Supply

Three countries produce over half of world copper

Chile (24%), Peru (10%), and the DRC (13%) together account for nearly half of global mine production. Top mining companies include Codelco, BHP, Freeport-McMoRan, Glencore, and Anglo American. New mine projects routinely take 10-15 years from discovery to first production, and grades at existing major mines have been declining for decades, both structural supply constraints.

Demand

Electrification drives the copper bull case

Copper demand is roughly 50% China, with construction, electrical grid, and manufacturing the largest end uses. The growth narrative centers on electrification: EVs use roughly 4x the copper of ICE vehicles, renewable energy and grid expansion are copper-intensive, and AI data centers are an emerging incremental demand source. The IEA projects copper demand growing meaningfully faster than supply through 2040.

Policy and macro

China and US tariffs both move copper

Copper is highly sensitive to Chinese property and infrastructure activity (PMI, credit growth). US trade policy on refined copper, and Chinese smelter treatment-and-refining-charge dynamics, also influence price. LME stocks, COMEX inventories, and SHFE warehouse data are the most-watched indicators of physical tightness.

Copper fundamentals

COMEX Inventory
503,412 t

Up from under 100,000 tonnes a year ago. US tariff front-loading drove a roughly 5x build as imports pulled metal into bonded warehouses.

CME Group daily warehouse report
LME Inventory
68,150 t

Down from approximately 256,000 tonnes in Jan 2025 as metal was pulled into US bonded warehouses ahead of the tariff timeline.

LME daily stock report
SHFE Inventory
89,389 t

Normal Q1 build. Chinese spot premiums near discount; demand cautious.

Shanghai Futures Exchange
TC/RC Benchmark
$0/t

Down from $80/t in 2022. The 2025 annual benchmark TC/RC settled at zero; smelters are processing concentrate effectively for free, the clearest signal of upstream tightness in years.

Cu / Gold Ratio
0.00123

A widely-watched risk barometer. Gold outperforming copper historically signals industrial caution and capital flight to safe havens; the inverse signals risk-on cyclical confidence.

COMEX · Daily
Price Volatility (90-day)
~24%

Higher than gold but lower than energy commodities. Chinese demand data and COMEX inventory changes drive short-term spikes.
