How gold prices move

What’s moving this market

Structural fundamentals · Reviewed annually
Supply

Gold supply is mostly mine output and recycling

Annual mine production averages around 3,000-3,200 tonnes, with recycling adding another 1,100-1,300 tonnes. Top producing countries are China, Russia, Australia, Canada, and the US. Mine supply is relatively inelastic, new mines take 10+ years from discovery to production, so prices rise faster than supply can respond.

World Gold Council supply data
Demand

Jewelry, central banks, and investment dominate demand

Jewelry accounts for roughly 45-55% of annual demand, with India and China the largest consumers. Central banks have been net buyers since 2010 and added record amounts in 2022-2024 as reserve diversification accelerated. Investment demand (bars, coins, ETFs) flexes with macro conditions, real interest rates and dollar strength are the dominant short-term drivers.

World Gold Council demand trends
Policy and macro

Real rates and the dollar are the macro anchors

Gold is priced in dollars and bears no yield, so it competes with US Treasuries. When real (inflation-adjusted) Treasury yields rise, gold underperforms; when real yields fall, gold typically gains. Dollar strength is a secondary headwind. Central bank reserve buying and geopolitical risk premia are the structural tailwinds that have shifted the long-run baseline.
